What’s Holding You Back?

Recently I achieved a goal that had been the culmination of 3 months’ worth of effort. I ran my first half marathon! Let me tell you why I took on this goal. To be honest, I have never really enjoyed running. Whenever I met people who love running, I noticed they have lean long legs. I thought to myself, “Of course they love running; they are built for it.” I do not have lean, long legs and concluded I could never be good at it. However, a few years ago, a friend of mine and I decided to change up our workouts by meeting throughout the summer to run an average of 3-4 miles a few times a week. Imagine my surprise when a few months ago she announced that she wanted us to run a half marathon. I came up with all sorts of objections. After all, we usually ran intervals and had never run more than 3 miles at a time. Secretly I didn’t think I could do it – and didn’t want to fail! In the end I decided to support her dream. And so the goal was set.

This process taught me many lessons. Throughout the next week or two, I will share those lessons with you.

Lesson 1 – We limit ourselves

Initially I thought of all the reasons why I would not succeed. I realized I needed to put fears aside and change my inner dialogue to all the reasons why I would succeed. I pushed self-imposed restrictions aside and decided to take on the challenge.
